DELEGATION

Adult Family Home caregivers can be delegated by a Registered Nurse so that they can provide the administration of medications and treatments to the resident who is not able to self administer their own medications or treatments.

The Nurse Delegation Program in the Adult Family Home allows nursing assistants or caregivers to perform certain tasks normally performed by the Registered Nurse such as the administration of prescription medications, wound care, tube feeding, blood glucose testing, or insulin injections in the Adult Family Home.

A Registered Nurse Delegator must teach and supervise the nursing assistant, as well as provide nursing assessments of the patient's condition.

The Registered Nurse Delegator will monitor the caregiver to ensure medications are given correctly practicing the 5 rights of medication administration; identifying the right patient, right time, right medication, right dose, and right route of administration.

Delegation education also includes timely and accurate documentation, and reporting to the physician of any changes in mental health or physical conditions or medication issues.
